Home Design Preferences of Women

Home designers are responding to women’s interests and reflect their opinions in the model homes. This is not surprising given that women are key decision makers in home purchases accounting to 83% of consumer spending decisions in the United States is the proportion of women homebuyers is 22% and increases each year and the designers and builders are always trying to take advantage of women’s influence in the buying process. One of the main objectives of the recent International Builder’s Show in Orlando was the need to build homes with designs that buyers of women please. Recognizing women’s influence in the buying process at a seminar on “Building houses for women,” Architect Ann Olson and Paul Foresman, manager Omaha-Based Design Basics, offered what they described as “Ten Commandments of the woman-centric home design. Here are the ten areas for builders and designers based on what women want in home design: 1. Women want options in the master bathroom, although they seem unable to decide on finding a bath in the tub. Builders and designers need special attention to the design of anti-stress areas such as swimming. 2. Women have a lot of storage space in the back room to store orders. They want more storage cupboard and a separate utility. The manufacturers would be well advised to access the back room more attention than treating them as a mud room to give. 3. A kitchen is an important place for women and serves as chief entertainment district. Given the choice between a larger kitchen and a bath more control, women prefer the first. Farmers therefore have more design kitchens. 4. Women who have blended families have their homes, private bathrooms, instead of sharing them. 5. The women want their home can easily organize. They prefer to closet organization systems that doubles the storage capacity of regular deliveries. 6. Women want more storage space in their homes especially in the kitchen. They need a more pantry kitchen, store prepared foods. 7. Women prefer home designs that allow natural light in their homes as a window above the bath in the shower, etc. 8. Women prefer home exteriors little or no maintenance, such as decks without maintenance. 9. Women want to change accommodation must be designed with flexible features. 10. The women who run businesses from home or work from home prefer houses with office space.
